Lean (PIMMS)

IPI utilizes a lean manufacturing system, the Prison Industries Manufacturing & Management Systems (PIMMS), based on principles from the Toyota Production System in all our operations.

While PIMMS has continuously evolved since its inception, the basic principles were introduced in 2016 to:

  1. Help us be better suppliers for our customers
  2. Provide a better work environment
  3. Provide all IPI associates new learning opportunities and skills

All IPI staff and incarcerated associates are introduced to the four sections of the lean / PIMMS structure: standardization, visual managed metrics, people involvement, and continuous improvement. Within each of these sections, a variety of tools are available to further develop skills such as 6S, Kaizen, PPS, metric boards, audits, TPM, and much more.

IPI uses a belt level system to assess each team’s knowledge and usage of the principles of PIMMS in their daily operations.

PIMMS has proven to provide excellent skill development for the incarcerated men and women working in an IPI program. Plus, the lean knowledge they are gaining is in demand by Iowa employers. Released program participants are also able to access a number of IPI’s PIMMS forms and documents to utilize in their future endeavors.
