Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers to “not to use any hand sanitizer manufactured by Eskbiochem SA de CV in Mexico, due to the potential presence of methanol (wood alcohol), a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested.” The hand sanitizer from Mexico was distributed under various brand names including Saniderm, UVT, All-Clean, Esk Biochem and CleanCare.
Subsequently the list of products that the FDA recommended against was expanded to include a total of 94 items, all but one of which were manufactured in Mexico. The current list may be found here: https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug...
Hand Sanitizer produced by Iowa Prison Industries (IPI) is manufactured according to U.S. FDA requirements and using the process and formulation developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Methanol is not used as an ingredient in IPI’s Hand Sanitizer products.
The FDA also reminds users that all hand sanitizer is dangerous if ingested, particularly by small children. While hand sanitizers with possible methanol contamination are more life-threatening than those that are not contaminated, FDA urges consumers not to drink any of these products. And in particular, all hand sanitizer should be kept out of the reach of small children.
